EQUINOM SESAMe
THE Sesame VARIETIES that Have it all!
Introducing the industry’s first all-in-one non-GMO sesame varieties

Introducing the industry’s first all-in-one non-GMO sesame varieties
Up to twice the yield of traditional sesame
Non-shattering
Sweet, aromatic and flavorful
Growing traditional sesame is manual-labor-intensive. The crop must be delicately cut and sheaved by hand while green and dried in the field. The seeds must be threshed manually; otherwise, the pods shatter and scatter the sesame seeds, which is wasteful and costly.
Until now, genetics have dictated that sesame plants could not be harvested mechanically, unlike hardy grains such as wheat or corn. Over 98% of global sesame produced are shattering varieties that must be harvested manually.
The few known non-shattering varieties that can be mechanically harvested tend to be bitter and/or produce low yields. Sesame is an orphan crop; therefore, the industry has not invested in new development or produced significant breakthroughs in many years.
Equinom Sesame has revived this stagnant sector, ushering in the future of sesame – a dynamic industry full of potential… and flavor.
Since 2012, Equinom Sesame has been breeding unique non-GMO sesame varieties with the three key traits that the industry has been hungering for: mechanically harvestable, high yields and exceptional, sweet taste, which makes all the difference. With Equinom Sesame, state-of-the-art farming, high productivity and rich flavor all come together in single profitable varieties.
In 2024, we reached a new milestone: Equinom Sesame now thrives in over 35,000 hectares around the globe.Equinom works and partners with prominent international agricultural enterprises with state-of-the-art supply chains.
For over 13 years, we have been dedicated to collecting unique sesame varieties from diverse sources and crossing them to create the largest sesame germplasm collection in human history!
This unparalleled gene bank houses over 90,000 distinct varieties, each meticulously stored, labeled, and documented with detailed genetic and phenotypic data.
This monumental resource forms the foundation of our current and future breeding programs, enabling us to continuously innovate and unlock the full potential of sesame cultivation.
With exclusive insights, Equinom has unlocked many secrets of sesame DNA. We have discovered the parts of the genome responsible for sesame bitterness and identified the genomic regions that drive appealing, sweet taste. These factors are determined by amino acid composition and correlate with carbohydrate, oil and protein content.
Equinom breeds new sesame varieties by analyzing each variety’s genetic markers, selecting only the plants that produce tasty sesame and excluding bitter-seed producers from breeding. This novel program has made Equinom Sesame synonymous with delicious sesame.
In evaluating sesame for tahini, Equinom determined that varieties with Type A MASI0003362 marker had a 75% chance of producing sweet sesame, while Type G had a 35% chance. In “keeping the best and getting rid of the rest,” we use Type A for breeding and eliminate Type G from the program.
All our varieties carry unique, patented genetic markers, which enable easy identification of our proprietary varieties. All sesame seeds and plants can be verified authentic using a PCR test. Even products like tahini can be tested to determine whether they are produced from Equinom Sesame.
Traders and processors can be sure they purchase genuine Equinom Sesame to take advantage of its distinct flavor profile, processing qualities and other essential properties.
